As ships enter Portland Harbor they navigate narrow seas between islands and the shore. Spring Point Ledge is the last major obstruction between the open ocean and Portland, where many ships ran aground in the late 1800s. After at least seven shipping companies had ships damaged at Spring Point the federal government agreed that a lighthouse was needed. Construction began in 1897, and cost approximately $45,000 at the time.
